Non-Surgical Face Tightening: RF vs Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) Explained

Non-surgical facial tightening is not one single treatment. Options include energy-based devices such as radiofrequency and focused ultrasound (HIFU), as well as injectables or thread procedures in suitable cases. At STC, Oligio X and Ultraformer III are two of the main devices considered for early loss of firmness and mild-to-moderate laxity, but they work in different ways.
Before choosing, describe what you want to change: descending cheeks, a deeper fold, crepey skin or a softer jawline. Similar-looking concerns can have different causes.

What do the treatment groups address?
RF and HIFU encourage collagen changes and tissue tightening. Fillers restore volume where appropriate. Certain collagen-stimulating injectables address tissue quality within their indications. Botulinum toxin acts on muscles and movement-related lines, while threads provide mechanical support in selected patients.
These approaches are not interchangeable. A fold associated with hollow cheeks needs different consideration from one associated with sagging. Significant excess skin may call for a surgical discussion. [3][4]
How RF works
Radiofrequency creates heat in the treated tissue, supporting collagen contraction and subsequent remodelling. Oligio X is a monopolar RF system. We consider it when firmness and relatively early laxity are the main concerns, then plan the area, mode and energy around the individual skin. [1]
How focused ultrasound works
HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It concentrates ultrasound energy into focal areas at depths determined by the selected cartridge. Ultraformer III combines this principle with the manufacturer’s MMFU system.
Depth and placement are useful planning tools when we assess cheek or jawline laxity, alongside tissue thickness and facial volume. [2]

This does not mean RF works only superficially and HIFU only deeply. Device design and the actual plan determine tissue effects, and tightening benefits can overlap.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need HIFU after RF?
Not automatically. A combination should have a clear additional purpose, with clinical planning of timing and sequence.
Does non-surgical mean no side effects?
No. Devices can cause redness, swelling, tenderness or complications. Injectables and threads have their own procedure-specific risks.
Can it match a surgical facelift?
Non-surgical methods generally aim for gradual improvement in selected laxity. Marked sagging or excess skin deserves a discussion of surgery too.
At a consultation, describe the area you want to improve rather than simply asking for a “lift.” That makes it easier to work out whether the main issue is laxity, volume or another structural factor.
